Acclaimed children's book illustrator and author Sophie Blackall returned to Ensworth's Red Gables Campus for the third time on Monday, January 22 for the renowned Patchwork series.
Blackall discussed her Caldecott Medal-winning picture book, Hello Lighthouse, during her last visit. Published in 2018, the beautifully rendered illustrations in Hello Lighthouse take readers on a journey to experience the daily life of a lighthouse keeper and his family amidst the changing seasons. She regaled students on how she lived in a lighthouse keeper's hut as research for the book. Blackall shared insights into her process and how she started her career by drawing and writing, just like Ensworth students.
Originally from Australia, Sophie Blackall has illustrated over 50 books for children, including the popular Ivy and Bean series and Finding Winnie, which also won the Caldecott. Her new book Ahoy!, written and illustrated by her and set to be released in April, follows the high seas adventure of a parent and child who are just using their imaginations at home on the couch.
During this visit, Blackall once again talked with and demonstrated her art for Lower and Middle School students. She also joined Middle School students in art class for a workshop on collaborative artistry.
